Chery iCar Set To Spark An EV Revolution In SA

The electric vehicle (EV) market in South Africa is about to shift gears in a major way. Chery, one of the fastest-growing automotive brands in the country, has announced the arrival of its futuristic EV sub-brand, iCar, which is set to launch locally in early 2026.

We’re thrilled to welcome this bold new chapter from Chery, a brand that has gone from comeback kid to top 10 local performer in just a few years. The first two models heading our way will be the iCar 03 and the iCar V23, and they’re bringing next-generation energy with them.

From fresh designs and high-tech features to clever drivetrain choices and eye-catching performance stats, here’s everything you need to know.

A New Chapter For Chery SA

Chery’s comeback to South Africa in 2021 was nothing short of spectacular. After first entering the local market in 2008, the brand temporarily stepped back, only to re-emerge with a bang. By 2024, Chery had cemented its place as the eighth best-selling car brand in the country, with over 20,000 units sold. The Tiggo 4 Pro, in particular, became a household name, ending up as the sixth best-selling new vehicle in SA for the year.

Now, the company is getting ready to shake up the EV market with iCar, which will be launched under its own nameplate and dealership network. This makes iCar the fifth brand under the Chery Group to land on South African shores, joining Chery, OMODA, JAECOO, and Jetour.

Meet The iCar 03

The iCar 03 is a compact, urban-ready crossover that blends sleek looks with clever engineering. Designed for younger, tech-savvy drivers, it offers two EV powertrain options: a single-motor setup with 137 kW and a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive version with 208 kW output.

Battery choices include 51 kWh and 70 kWh packs, giving a maximum claimed range of up to 501 km. That’s plenty for most daily needs, with some extra mileage for weekend trips. The 03 will also be available as a range-extender electric vehicle (REEV), offering the added flexibility of an onboard petrol engine that charges the battery, for those longer hauls or areas with limited charging infrastructure.

Inside, expect a thoroughly modern setup, anchored by a 15.4-inch touchscreen and practical touches like phone and tablet mounts, rotary selectors, and physical switches for essential functions.

Say Hello To The iCar V23

If the iCar 03 is city-smart, the iCar V23 is built for exploration. This compact SUV has a bold, retro-inspired design that draws from iconic 4x4s like the Land Rover Defender, Jeep Wrangler, and G-Wagon. It’s rugged, boxy, and full of character, but what’s under the skin is even more exciting.

The V23 will come with battery options ranging from 47 kWh to 82 kWh, depending on the configuration, offering driving ranges between 301 km and 501 km. Performance specs are just as compelling:

  • Entry-level rear-wheel-drive model: 100kW, 180Nm
  • Dual-motor all-wheel-drive model: 292kW, 455Nm
  • 0–100km/h in 3.5 seconds

This isn’t just for show either. The V23 boasts off-road credentials like 210mm ground clearance, a 600mm wading depth, and impressive approach and departure angles of 43 and 41 degrees, respectively.

There’s no low-range gearbox, but it’s clear that this vehicle is aimed at lifestyle-driven adventurers who want EV capability with genuine off-road confidence. Bonus: all models come with vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, so you can plug in camping gear, fridges, or tools when heading off the beaten track.

Designed With Mzansi Drivers In Mind

Chery’s decision to offer both EV and REEV options shows how in tune they are with local conditions. Load-shedding, charging station rollouts, and long-distance travel across the country all come into play when considering an EV, and these models are clearly built with that in mind.

The REEV system prioritises electric driving, but includes an engine that can recharge the battery when needed. It’s a clever solution for those who want to lower their fuel costs and emissions, but still need the peace of mind of extended range.

Full Of Flair (Inside And Out!)

Both the iCar 03 and V23 embrace bold styling with strong road presence. The V23 in particular will offer extensive customisation options, including various grille designs, wheel choices, roof racks, lights, and colour options. It’s modular, functional, and packed with personality.

The cabin of the V23 is a masterclass in blending old-school cool with modern flair. Expect high-tech features like adaptive cruise control, auto emergency braking, blind spot detection, and auto parking, alongside rugged finishes and handy interior mounts for gear and gadgets.

What’s In A Name?

Initially, Chery had planned to badge the iCar 03 as the JAECOO J6 in South Africa. However, the brand later decided that iCar had such a distinct personality that it needed its own dedicated launch. This also sidesteps potential naming conflicts with a certain global tech brand famous for sticking “i” in front of everything.

Chery has been using the iCar name in China since 2007, and while Apple may have secured some international trademarks, there is no registered claim on the iCar name for vehicles in South Africa. Chery has applied for both “iCar” and “iCaur” trademarks locally and appears to be moving forward confidently.

So, What Lies Ahead For The iCar In RSA?

The arrival of iCar signals a massive step forward in Chery’s mission to innovate and lead in electric mobility. It’s a bold play, packed with real-world usability, fresh thinking, and an approach that makes EV ownership feel accessible and exciting.

Whether you’re into city cruising or mountain missions, there’s an iCar coming that’s built for your lifestyle. Check back on the Group1 Chery blog for the latest updates on the local iCar launch, deep dives into features, and all the latest news from the world of Chery. We’re just getting started.
