It’s official: SA is getting a new bakkie from Chery!

Chinese automakers have been making quite a splash in the pickup segment lately, and Chery is no exception. Since re-entering the South African market, the Chery brand has acquired significant success, and it shows no signs of slowing down. The Chinese automaker is set to expand its lineup even further with a new bakkie, and this is exciting news for us at Group1 Chery.

We’re thrilled about this development not just because we’re passionate fans of the Chinese brand, but because it signifies Chery’s commitment to innovation and growth. The new midsize pickup truck is set to compete with popular models like the Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max, Ford Ranger, and Nissan Navara – which happen to be among the best-selling vehicles in the country.

Here’s What We Know So Far

According to multiple sources, the newcomer will be based on a unibody platform rather than a conventional body-on-frame. Although details are still scarce, the yet-to-be-named newcomer is expected to debut in 2025. This aligns with Chery’s announcement from 2022 about their plans to produce a new pickup truck as part of the company’s broader expansion plan into global markets.

More claims suggest that the new bakkie will be offered in single-cab and double-cab body styles, and will most likely incorporate styling from the current Tiggo models. While this remains to be seen, it is confirmed that the new bakkie is being developed by Karry, one of Chery’s sub-brands dedicated to light commercial vehicles (LCVs).

Powertrains are still a mystery at this point. However, a diesel engine is almost a sure bet if Chery wants to capture sales from the segment’s leaders. That said, considering the Chinese market’s preference for alternatives to diesel, we can also expect turbo petrol options and possibly an all-electric variant. With Chery’s full lineup of plug-in hybrids, a plug-in hybrid version of the new bakkie is also likely. It’s shaping up to be an exciting and versatile lineup!

Interesting Look, Car-Like Design

Unofficial renderings hint that the new bakkie will sport Chery’s distinctive diamond grille, complemented by sleek LED headlights and daytime running lights seamlessly integrated into the design. It will also come equipped with a steel bash plate for off-road capabilities. Additionally, the cabin is expected to be taller than that of the Tiggo SUV offering improved ride height and visibility.

As expected, the interior will closely resemble that of the Tiggo Pro, providing familiar features that Chery buyers appreciate. This includes dual 10.25-inch screens, a 360-degree camera system, remote start, ambient lighting, heated front seats and steering wheel, wireless charging capabilities, climate control, adaptive cruise control and parking sensors.

Awaiting Its Arrival

At Group1 Chery, we can’t wait to see what this new bakkie has to offer. With Chery’s reputation for quality and performance, we’re confident it will be a game-changer in the segment.
