Chery’s resurgence in the South African car market has increasingly gained momentum, and the brand continues to make waves with its unique approach to offering quality vehicles at competitive prices. Their initial success with the Tiggo 4 Pro, Tiggo 7 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro variants has set the stage for further expansion, and 2024 promises to be an exciting year.
The Chinese carmaker is gearing up for an exciting lineup of new releases, with its luxury subsidiaries Omoda and Jaecoo leading the charge. Their ambitious plans are part of a larger corporate initiative under the ‘New Journey New Life’ banner, which focuses on responsible manufacturing and environmental sustainability.
In particular, Chery is committed to ongoing development in electric and plug-in hybrid technology while enhancing their existing range of combustion engines. Slated for the first half of 2024 is the Jaecoo J7, fitted with a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol powertrain with 140kW and 275Nm. The J7 will be followed by the flagship J8 later in the year, a six-seater SUV featuring the same 2.0 T-GDi engine found in the revamped Tiggo 8 Pro Max.
Additionally, Omada is set to bolster its domestic lineup with an all-new C9, the second model of the marque after the C5. The C9 has a 2.0 T-GDi engine and an eight-speed automatic gearbox delivering outputs of 192kW/400Nm.
On The Move To Electric
In line with Chery’s SA electrification strategy, Omoda will introduce the battery-electric E5 in quarter two of 2024. The E5 will be the first all-electric vehicle from any of the Chery group’s brands in South Africa, linked to a 61kWh battery with 150kW and 340Nm.
Tony Liu, Executive Deputy General Manager, Chery South Africa, says: “This is the first time Chery has been able to bring together customers and dealers from around the world to experience everything Chery is standing for, and it is not just about the car, rather it is about the family and the environment and how we all fit into that.”
Chery’s awaited plug-in hybrid Tiggo 7 Pro and Tiggo 8 Pro, labelled “e+,” will arrive in the last three months of 2024/early 2025. Both will combine a 1.5 T-GDi engine and 19.27-kWh battery for a total system output of 180kW/510Nm.
And with the imminent arrival of the all-wheel-drive Tiggo 8 Pro Max later this year, Chery reaffirms its dedication to offering a diverse vehicle lineup catering to a wide array of tastes and requirements.
The pricing and equipment details for these vehicles will be revealed closer to their 2024 launch dates. Stay tuned for more!
